What to Check on Your Doors Before a Storm

Open and close each exterior door and feel for sticking, dragging along the frame, or a latch that does not catch cleanly. Any of those usually mean the frame has shifted or the hinges have dropped, both of which get worse under the pressure and moisture a storm brings. Run a hand along the weatherstripping too. If it is cracked, flattened or pulling away from the frame, water will find its way in long before the door itself fails.
Storm and Screen Doors
If a storm or screen door is already installed, check that it latches securely and that the frame is still tight against the house. If one has never been added to a heavily exposed entry, storm season is the most practical time to have one put in, since it gives the main entry door an extra layer of protection against wind and debris.
